Why visit Steinhatchee
A little bit of Steinhatchee history
According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Steinhatchee is located at the mouth of the Steinhatchee River. Deadman Bay was on Spanish maps by the early 1500s. Spanish Conquistador Panfilo de Narvaez came through the area in 1529, followed by Hernando de Soto ten years later. DeSoto crossed the Steinhatchee River at the “Falls” which also served as a crossing point for Native Americans and settlers in the 1800’s.
Canoes and flat boats were the first means of transportation across the river. A ferry was used up until 1948,when a one lane swing bridge that had been removed from Scott’s Ferry, near Blountstown, was installed. This bridge served until 1983 when the present concrete bridge was constructed. Electricity came to Steinhatchee in 1945, and telephone service was established in 1948.
Fishing
Fall fishing
During the fall season, the weather is warm but starts to become cooler. This is the time period for fish migration. They come closer to the warmer, near shore water. These weather conditions make the water temperature perfect for fishing activities.
Spring Fishing
Going fishing during the spring season is a relaxing activity to share with your loved ones. As the water warms on the grass of the Steinhatchee river, there are different types of fishes you can easily catch. At My Fishing Buddy Charters, we provide everything that you and your family need to have a memorable adventure.
Eating your catch
Eating Fish according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
Why eat fish? Eating fish has a lot of benefits for your health. It may help reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Fish are high in omega 3 fatty acids—a type of fatty acid that supports fetal, infant, and child brain and eye development—good for mothers and children.
Adults should eat about 8 ounces of fish each week, and women who are pregnant, or breastfeeding, should eat 8 to 12 ounces (cooked weight) of fish per week. Eating a variety of fish has the most benefit.
