Since the early 19th century, the village of Steinhatchee played an integral part in the foresting industry, particularly cedar used for making pencils, as well as fishing, crabbing and scalloping. The Steinhatchee River also flows by the community and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Bird Watching:
There are some definite hotspots in Natural North Florida. The St. Marks Wildlife Refuge is 68,000 acres of wonderful habitat in Jefferson, Wakulla and Taylor Counties, and for serious birders it’s a must-visit. A number of Big Bend Wildlife Management areas are excellent, among them the Aucilla Sinks, Hagens Cove, Jena, and Steinhatchee units. For shore birds, the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve and the island itself are another common destination in the fall and winter.
Fishing in Steinhatchee:
The Big Bend Coast has little to no sand or mud and is full of pristine grass flats and clear water. The Gulf Coast, especially near the Steinhatchee area, is full of pristine grass flats and beautiful clear water.
The most popular fish species in Steinhatchee are the Redfish and Speckled sea trout.

Scallop Season:
Steinhatchee and the Big Bend area are the best places to find scallops.
The Florida Bay Scallop grows and lives in seagrass beds in shallow water (normally 4-10 feet deep). Today, healthy populations can only be found in selected locations along Florida’s west coast: St. Joseph Bay, the Steinhatchee and Keaton Beach areas of the Big Bend, and the areas near the Crystal and Homosassa rivers.
Scallops may be spotted on or at the bottom of seagrass beds. Keep collected scallops in a mesh bag, or else you might get pinched.
Hiking at the Big Bend Area:
Florida’s waterfall pours over a lip of limestone in the Steinhatchee River.
You have the option to drive down a bumpy dirt road to get to the falls, you can also find your way there by foot along the 3.3 mile Steinhatchee Trail.
It meanders through oak hammocks, scrubby flatwoods, and bluff forest in Lower Steinhatchee Conservation Area for a spectacular finish at the falls.
